Man, I just love this time of the year, even all the way from South Africa. When we lived in America, if I wasn’t at The Horseshoe with 105,000 other crazy fans, then I was surely watching it on television. I hardly ever missed a game. After we came to South Africa, my friend, Mark Hawks, would send me the OSU games on tape.
I’m a Buckeye through and through. It’s in my blood. We raised our girls to be Buckeye fans as well and they learned O-H-I-O at an early age! My love for the game and my team has not wavered a bit, and I’m proud that Ohio State was last year’s undisputed National Champion!
In Columbus “undisputed” became the defining word for Ohio State’s amazing season. (Stay with me all you Michigan, Notre Dame and Alabama friends and fans!) The city even posted a street sign along Lane Avenue on campus…“The Undisputed Way.”
During our last trip to the states, a long-time friend of mine gave me a magnet that said “The Undisputed Way.” It now graces the front of our refrigerator in South Africa and I smile every time I see it. Why? Well, one reason is that I like to gloat (even though most people around me don’t care!). But I also love to think about the words in light of the gospel.
Undisputed, according to Webster’s Dictionary, means “not to be called into question; accepted.” The synonyms are words like uncontested, undoubted, unchallenged, unequivocal, unmistakable, certain, definite, and the list goes on.
I think we all know how undisputed describes the Buckeyes, but in an even greater way there are more reasons to cheer and be excited about knowing we are rightly related to the one who is the true “Undisputed Way.” Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way the truth and the life…” Jesus is the undisputed way, the only way, the unmistakable, unequivocal, certain way to God the Father and eternal life. There are not many ways to God, there is only one. Acts 4:12 says it like this, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
As an Ohio grown and supported missionary family, I can say this with certainty…most of our supporters are Buckeyes, while ALL are followers of the Undisputed Way – Jesus. So, for all those Buckeye fans, let’s cheer loud and hard. And for everyone who reads or hears the words “undisputed way,” let’s think of Jesus and keep on proclaiming the good news of The One who came to bring us life. Even life beyond football!
Love to all of you. Enjoy an exciting football season – and here’s to another run at a National Championship! Go Bucks!
