A warm summer greeting to all our family, friends and supporters on this side of the ocean! While it is winter in South Africa, Nancy and I arrived back in the states for a mini-furlough. We just completed a crazy busy schedule in Cape Town before we left and wanted to pass along an updated on a couple of recent ministry efforts. Here are the highlights on two ministries and how you can continue to pray:
Missionary Training Centre in Cape Town – Nate and Lauren Bell are a young couple from Ohio who were with us for three months, serving in a variety of ministries and completing what we hope will become an official short-term missionary training program for Southern Africa. They completed a rigorous schedule of speaking in our churches, holiday Bible clubs, youth groups as well as teaching Bible in a government school. We also exposed them to a variety of potential ministries and partners in the area of community development and compassion ministries throughout the country. By that I mean, ministries like orphanages, job skills training programs, and evaluating the great need to come along side our church planters, especially in impoverished communities. We are grateful for the way God used this couple in the lives of many South Africans and how God, in turn, used many people there to do His work in leading Nate and Lauren as they consider how they might be used in long-term missions. Pray for the Bells and also for this ministry as Nancy and I work on developing a training centre in South Africa. Could you or someone you know be the next to come for some missionary and cross-culture training?
New Church Plant in Hermanus – Another highlight to share is God’s continued work with regard to our new church plant in Hermanus, South Africa. The ministry is off to a good start. This is the group of people that gathered in Hermanus on the Saturday just before we left. We have begun a Bible study, which we hope will become the nucleus for the new church. They have been meeting with Pastor Lönngren in our absence and are working their way through The Way to Joy discipleship material. As we continue to spread the word within the community and seek the Lord’s will, please pray for us as we move forward!
Mini-Furlough from July to September – While in America for these three months we are spending time with family and friends, completing some Regional Administrator training at ABWE, meeting with our pre-field missionaries and recruiting, as well as visiting our supporting churches and individuals. These three months always go fast and we’ll be back in South Africa again soon – but not until Tom gets in an Ohio State football game and we get lots of hugs from the grandkids!
